Barriers women face while climbing up the ladder of a successful career………

Carol Hymowitz and Timothy D. Schellhardt were the first to use the term “glass ceiling”in their March 24, 1986 article in the Wall Street Journal. There’s an illusion that everything has changed, that men and women are equal.  Most women aspiring to senior management positions believe the glass ceiling to career progression still exists. Outnumbered, women tend to be ignored by men. Men are promoted more quickly than women with equivalent qualifications, even in traditionally female settings such as nursing and education. People view female managers as more deceitful, pushy, selfish, and abrasive than successful male managers.  There is a preconceived perception that women do not have the required qualities that would make them leaders of tomorrow.

Women are themselves to be blamed for hindering their career growth.Individual women do not put forward themselves for various positions. They are still the ones who interrupt their careers to handle family trade-offs. The lack of confidence always interrupts the recognition of their abilities and they often make the mistake of thinking “somebody else is going to recognise their brilliance”. Women need to “step out of line” instead of waiting to be recognized, unless they pursue their strengths on their own, other people will dictate their lives.

Certain ideologies women need to inculcate in them that would help them reach great heights in their career growth.

  •  Not to be afraid to try and fail.
  • Don’t cut yourself short. Believe in yourself; don’t take it when you are told “you are just a girl”. Learn to lead and be someone to be looked up to even if it’s only you, looking up to yourself.
  • Decide who you want to be and pursue that career track in spite of the odds.
  • Leadership is a learnable skill. Don’t neglect to develop it as early as possible.

Organizations today must be accountable for building an effective talent pipeline, and make it a commercial priority to proactively identify, develop and promote potential leaders of both sexes. Now is the time for employers to set voluntary targets for female representation at the board and senior management level.

Nothing succeeds like success – it is your triumphs that will get you to the top, not the fact that you are a woman.
